My Darling Clementine (1946) is a classic American Western directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda as legendary lawman Wyatt Earp. Set in Tombstone, Arizona, the film follows Earp and his brothers as they become entangled in a violent conflict with the Clanton family. After one of the Earp brothers is killed, Wyatt accepts the position of town marshal and works to bring order to the lawless community. Along the way, he develops a friendship with the troubled gambler and gunfighter Doc Holliday, played by Victor Mature, and meets Clementine Carter, played by Cathy Downs. The story builds toward the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
Known for its striking black-and-white cinematography, memorable performances, and John Ford’s romantic portrayal of the American West, My Darling Clementine is widely regarded as one of the great films of the Western genre. It was also a particular favorite of President Harry S. Truman, who reportedly considered My Darling Clementine his favorite movie.
