Truman Music Series – Libby York March 11th

Truman Music Series

presents

Libby York & Tom Vaitsas

Monday, March 11, 2024 – Performed inside of the Harry S. Truman Little White House                                                                 Doors Open at 5:15 pm        Show starts at 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Libby York is not the kind of jazz singer that needs vocal pyrotechnics to engage an audience. Whether she is singing a ballad or swinging hard on a standard, her deep connection to the lyrics and subtle improvisations on the melody conveys an intimacy that makes each song feel like she is telling a story about her own life. York is one of the finest storytellers and singers on the scene today. While her cool style is reminiscent of past legends like Peggy Lee and June Christy, Libby York’s conversational style, hip phrasing, a superb sense of time, and deep connection to a song’s lyrics, show the art of masterful storytelling is alive and well in the 21st century.

Tom Vaitsas started playing piano in Chicago in 1992 while finishing his B.A. and music degrees from NIU. 2000-2008 was a period of European tours with blues legends Lurie and Carrie Bell while also working in Chicago between trips. He has performed with jazz greats such as Von Freeman, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Russell Malone. Vaitsas still continues to perform in and out of Chicago with various groups.
