Presentation by Amy and Josh Carter
Discover the real-life experiences of the Carter family members and our 39th President, Jimmy Carter.
Like many US Presidents, Jimmy Carter was a Renaissance man with wide-ranging interests. Among these were woodworking and painting. These pursuits would give him the skills to do the practical work of building houses and furnishing his family home, connect him to the art and culture he loved to experience while traveling, and provide a meditative outlet when dealing with complex problems. These were meaningful tasks, often hidden from the public eye that he turned to for decades.
He loved to work on and discuss his crafts with his children and grandchildren (frequently making them feel lucky to do the sanding.)
His daughter Amy Carter and grandson Joshua Carter will reflect on their first-hand experiences and observations of Jimmy Carter as a craftsperson.
About the speakers:
Amy Lynn Carter is the only daughter and youngest child of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. She entered the national spotlight as a child living in the White House from age nine, becoming one of the first presidential children to attend public school while in residence. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Amy was active in political protests focused on U.S. foreign policy, including anti-apartheid demonstrations. She later pursued education and the arts, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Memphis College of Art and a master’s in art history from Tulane University. Amy has illustrated her father’s children’s book and is a member of the Carter Center’s board of counselors, supporting the organization’s human rights and diplomacy work. She has kept a relatively private life, residing in Georgia with her family.
Josh Carter is the fourth grandchild of President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. He is the host of the show “Unchanging Principles – Life Inside My Presidential Family,” where he reflects on his upbringing and the values passed down through his family. Co-founder and CEO of the nonprofit VEO-IBD Foundation and a longtime advocate for family caregivers, Josh continues his grandmother Rosalynn Carter’s legacy and speaks nationwide on the challenges of caregiving, including at the United Nations, the White House, “The Today Show,” and major universities. His and Mrs. Carter’s stories are featured in the PBS documentary “Caregiving”, produced by Bradley Cooper. In 2025, he traveled to Liberia to help transition Africa’s first homegrown mental health program from The Carter Center to the Liberian government. Josh speaks on his grandparents’ behalf, including at U.S. Navy events, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, and President Carter’s state funeral at the National Cathedral. He is dedicated to elevating the principles his grandparents taught him about service, duty, democracy, human rights, and peace.
The event will take place on the lawn of the beautiful Harry S. Truman Little White House located at 111 Front St.
